Getting started
Using rule templates
Start from a pre-built template instead of from scratch.
Templates are pre-configured rules for common merchandising scenarios. They give you a working starting point that you can tweak instead of building from scratch.
Where to find them
Click Browse templates from the Home page or the empty state on the Rules page. You'll see a gallery organized by goal.
Common templates
| Template | What it does | Common use case |
|---|---|---|
| Move slow colors | Discounts variants by specific color options | End-of-season clearance on unpopular colors |
| Clear odd sizes | Discounts size variants like XS or 2XL | Reducing leftover inventory |
| Inventory clearance | Discounts variants below a stock threshold | Move slow inventory before reorder |
| Sale stack discount | Discounts variants already on sale by an extra % | Black Friday / Boxing Day stacked promotions |
| Collection-wide promo | Discounts a specific collection | Seasonal collection launches |
| Tag-based VIP | Discounts variants tagged for a customer group | Wholesale or member-only pricing |
| Free shipping over $X | Waives shipping on qualifying carts | Average order value bump |
| Buy 2 get 1 free | BXGY rule with quantity-based discount | Bundle promotions |
Some templates require the Growth plan (e.g. Product Option targeting).
How a template works
Picking a template pre-fills the rule with:
- A suggested title (you can rename it)
- The right rule type (Amount Off / BXGY / Free Shipping)
- A sensible default discount value
- Pre-built conditions you can adjust
Nothing is locked. Edit any field, add or remove conditions, and the rule behaves like one you built from scratch.
When to start from scratch instead
Use a template when one matches your scenario closely. Use Start from scratch when:
- Your conditions are highly specific (multiple metafield matches, custom AND/OR logic)
- You want to learn the condition builder by building it yourself
- None of the templates fit your goal
