Buy X Get Y rules
Buy one product, get another at a discount or free.
A Buy X Get Y (BXGY) rule rewards customers when they add specific items to their cart. The "Buy" side defines what triggers the offer; the "Get" side defines what gets discounted.
When to use it
- Bundle promotions ("Buy 2, get 1 free")
- Cross-sell incentives ("Buy a frame, get a poster 50% off")
- Quantity break promotions ("Buy 3 t-shirts, get the 4th free")
- Themed promotions ("Buy any pair of pants, get a belt 25% off")
Configuration

Both the "Buy" and "Get" sides use the same condition builder you use for Amount Off rules — collection, tag, SKU, price, inventory, product option, etc.
How the discount applies at checkout
When the cart contains the required Buy items, the discount applies to the Get items in the cart that match the Get conditions. The customer must have enough qualifying Buy items AND eligible Get items in the same cart.
If the customer has Buy items but not Get items, no discount applies. If the customer has Get items but not enough Buy items, no discount applies.
Examples
Buy 2 get 1 free (same product family)
Buy: Tag is "summer-tee", Quantity ≥ 2 Get: Tag is "summer-tee", Quantity = 1 Discount: Free (100% off) Result: Adding 3 summer tees gets the 3rd one free.
Cross-sell: buy any frame, get a poster 50% off
Buy: Collection is "Frames", Quantity ≥ 1 Get: Collection is "Posters", Quantity = 1 Discount: 50% off Result: Adding any frame plus any poster discounts the poster by 50%.
Bundle: buy entire outfit, get accessories 25% off
Buy: Tag is "main-piece", Quantity ≥ 1 AND Tag is "complement", Quantity ≥ 1 Get: Tag is "accessory", Quantity = 1 Discount: 25% off Result: When the cart has a main piece + complement, an accessory is 25% off.
Method options
- Automatic — applies to every eligible cart with no customer action
- Code-based — customer must enter your discount code at checkout for the offer to apply
Limits
A BXGY rule's matched variants on either side count toward the 100-line cap together. See Shopify's 100-variant limit.
